 Ecological Recycling Society (ERS) is a Greek environmental non-governmental organisation, which has been dealing, since 1989, with the promotion and implementation of environmentally sustainable waste management and awareness raising on subjects such as sustainable waste management on a local, national, European and international level. The organisation has also been active in the fields of sustainable use of natural resources and energy, sustainable production and consumption of goods, as well as in supporting environmentally-sound solutions to other environmental issues. Finally, it contributes to the formulation of waste management policies on a national and international level. One of the main activities of ERS is the implementation of projects related to aspects of sustainable waste management and environmental protection. In the past ERS has implemented LIFE Environment projects, in collaboration with national and European partners. It cooperates on a regular basis with local authorities as well as private organisations for the purpose of implementing various alternative waste management projects and conducts studies on waste management. In addition, ERS organises and participates in workshops, conferences and seminars, while cooperating with various European organisations. ERS is also a member of European networks concerned with the sustainable management of waste The main publication of ERS is the quarterly magazine “Waste and Recycling”. Since 1990, ERS has organised numerous public awareness campaigns for the protection of the environment, but also for the promotion of recycling and composting. Additionally, since its founding, representatives of ERS have visited more than 4.000 public and private schools in Greece and given presentations and talks to more than 600.000 pupils. Finally, ERS has participated in the committee that formulated the Greek legislation regarding packaging waste and harmonised the Greek legislation with the corresponding EU Directive 62/94 on packaging waste. The final legislation contains many of the proposals of ERS in that committee.
